I’ve Still Got a Lot of Fight Left in Me

In September, I had the privilege of being able to attend Lewis Howes’s Summit of Greatness in Los Angeles.  Among the first speakers or performers at the two-day event was singer and songwriter Rachel Platten.

I had never heard of Rachel Platten before (I generally prefer other genres of music), but I had definitely heard her song “Fight Song” before (despite not knowing who wrote it and sings it).  I am well aware of the song’s use by politicians and its use for political purposes, and this is not in any way, shape, or form an endorsement or commentary on any of the politicians, political issues, or political entities associated with the song “Fight Song.”  However, when I sat in Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and listened to Rachel Platten perform, the words of the song resonated with me.  The words “take back my life song” and “I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me” hit me with a wave of emotions and were exactly what I needed to hear in that moment.

By the time I left my teaching job a year and a half ago, I did not have a lot of fight left in me.  I was overworked, frustrated, and exhausted.  I had put on a lot of weight, wasn’t getting enough sleep, wasn’t exercising, was extremely stressed, and had been all-consumed by work.  The 85-90 hours I was working per work were creating all sorts of issues in my life, and I was using this excessive workload (that in many ways I had sought in order to have an excuse to leave a job I didn’t really want to have but instead that others wanted for me) to avoid dealing with other issues in my life.  When I decided to leave and people would ask me what I was going to do next, I would provide them with an answer, but in reality, I just wanted to feel human again.  I wanted to not feel exhausted all of the time and to have my clothes fit again. Everything else was secondary.

Sitting in that auditorium in Los Angeles over a year later helped me realize that not only was I going to “take back my life” but that I was going to help other people take back their lives as well.  I realized that “I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me” and that the roughly two-thirds of American workers who don’t like their jobs have a lot of fight left in them as well.  Most of us will spend 80,000-125,000 hours of our lives working, which definitely represents a significant portion of our lives.  That time shouldn’t be wasted on a job that beats you down and that you hate.
