Insanity in Your Job Search

It is often said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.  Unfortunately, for many people, their job search meets that definition.  They go on job sites, look for postings that are at least somewhat related to their experience and skills, and upload their resume to apply for as many of those postings as they can find.  It is the same process over and over again, while constantly waiting and hoping for a response from a potential employer.  It’s doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.  It’s the definition of insanity.

So if the process that many people attempt is insanity, then what would be a different approach?  What is a different way to proceed with your job search or career change that is more likely to yield results?  The answer, like with many areas of life, is to take control of the situation to the extent possible.  Don’t spend all of that time sitting, waiting, and hoping for an interview.  Take control of your narrative, your search, and your future.

Taking control means finding companies that might interest you and contacting potential bosses from those companies.  It means connecting with current and past employees and potential teammates from companies where you might want to work in order to learn more about the company and its culture.  It means doing what you can to get your resume in front of actual human beings and not just uploading it into an AI-based applicant tracking system.  It means connecting with potential bosses from companies that have job openings posted online and with potential bosses from companies that don’t have job openings posted online but that would almost certainly be interested in hiring someone who can better maximize their results over many of the individuals who currently work there.  It means targeted networking with a purpose and trying to provide value to those with whom you wish to connect.  It means including a summary and career highlights at the top of your resume, so a potential boss or recruiter doesn’t have to scan through bullet points stretched across multiple pages in order to try to construct a narrative about who you are, what you do, the most important things you have done, and how hiring you would likely benefit them and their organization.  It means being consistent and disciplined and reaching out to more people and more companies every single day.

Doing the same unsuccessful thing over and over again is unlikely to produce different results.  If you have uploaded your resume on countless job sites and submitted applications for countless positions while getting very few interviews, then it is probably time for a new approach.  Instead, try a people-centric approach that involves taking control and taking action.  If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, then try something different.  Don’t continue to try the same thing over and over again.  Try a different approach.  Try doing something that no longer meets the definition of insanity.
