A lot of people think that the way to land a new job or enter a new industry is to submit a bunch of applications online and hope for the best. “Spray and pray” as some people call it.
While that strategy can result in success, it’s usually not the best option. Targeted networking is a much better approach.
Networking is a scary word for most people. They have visions of handing out a bunch of business cards, making small talk with people who aren’t even in a position to help them, and adding a bunch of people they don’t know as contacts on LinkedIn and other social media platforms.
But networking is key. Figure out which companies interest you, reach out to people from those companies who work in positions that are relevant, and provide real value to them in order to start to develop real, genuine relationships. Then, focus on continuing to provide real value and continuing to build those relationships. Take an interest in their work, be helpful, and stay on their radar. Maintain and grow existing relationships too. Building strong relationships with the right people at companies where you actually want to work – that’s a way better approach most of the time than “spray and pray.”
