Networking is at the heart of so many job search success stories. Although numbers associated with how many jobs are found through networking vary, a commonly cited statistic attributed to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics claims that 70% of all jobs are found through networking. Many job openings are not even advertised and are filled solely off of connections.
So, what is networking? Some definitions center around interaction with others or the exchange of information or services. Other definitions focus on opportunities and contacts. Ultimately though, networking is about relationships. It is about getting to know someone, learning about their story, taking an interest in them, providing value, and developing a genuine connection.
Networking based around building relationships can open up all sorts of doors. An interesting conversation, a coffee chat, a Zoom call, and an in-person meeting can all lay the foundation for greater opportunities, additional insights, and new job prospects when coming from a place of genuine sincerity and when providing real value that ensures the person you are connecting with wants to help you. A personalized approach to networking can open up so many doors.
If you are struggling through a difficult career transition, then networking can help, just as the statistics demonstrate, but doing it in a way that is personalized, beneficial for both parties, and based on genuine interest and connection will make it that much more effective.
