Changing Careers Can Be Scary

Changing careers can be exciting and is sometimes necessary. But it can be scary too:

“What if it’s too late to change?”

“What if I don’t have the right experience?”

“I don’t know where to begin with a career change.”

“What if I can’t land an opportunity in a new industry?”

It’s definitely not too late, and you almost certainly have some relevant experience that demonstrates the value you would be able to provide in your desired new industry. Define your career goals, figure out what is important to you for your new career, and start researching companies that interest you. Reach out and network with people who can help you at companies of interest, provide value to those people and build relationships with them, change your resume and LinkedIn profile to reflect skills that transfer over to your new industry, use quantifiable results to prove the value you have provided in similar situations in the past and that you would be able to provide in your new industry in the future, and lean into why you want to change industries and the great insights and value your unconventional background will be able to provide to help companies and teams in your new area.

It’s not too late, and you can definitely do this! Think about what your companies of interest are trying to accomplish, what struggles or obstacles they might be encountering, and how your unique set of experiences and skills best positions you to help them overcome those obstacles and reach new heights as a company, team, or department.

I am starting a new career coaching cohort on Monday, December 1, where I will be able to help people who are scared of trying to change careers.
